Director of Product Design

Permanent employee, Full-time · London

Job Description

Numan is changing the way men look after their health and wellness. We’re building a platform that gives direct access to medical professionals, pharmaceutical products and the knowledge to make informed choices about your health. Our mission is to help men across the world live healthier, happier lives with Numan as their trusted, long-term partner for all things relating to their wellbeing.

Our aspirations are big - we recently raised significant capital working with industry-renowned, top tier investors including WhiteStar Anthemis, Novator and Vostok New Ventures, and we are looking to accelerate our growth in 2021 and beyond. We plan to expand our world class team to ensure we achieve our mission, and we are looking for the right person to work with the team to empower us to make this vision a reality.

We operate at the intersection of D2C subscription commerce and telehealth. Over the last two years, we’ve built the leading European digital health brand focused on men; scaled the engineering, growth, and medical teams. We’ve laid the foundation to build a category-defining company in digital-first healthcare.

As a part of our continued commitment as a product led organisation we’re now expanding our Product Team. We’re looking for a Product Design Director who will hold a strategic and multi-discipline craft leadership position; guiding overall product design, user experience, UXR and driving business goals through exceptionally realised products. You’ll be joining at a formative point in the company’s life, able to significantly influence both our customer offering as well as our culture, processes and ways of working in Product Design, Discovery and Research.

You will be responsible for leading a vision while forming and helping realise company strategies and targets through all the sub-functions of design. We’re rapidly growing both in the number of consumers and breadth of offering; thus it’s critical you are able to confidently guide the team in the delivery of user value today while also designing and putting in place the processes that will be repeatable and scalable as we grow. You should be capable of leading fluently across the Product Design Disciplines and all parts of the product life cycle (From Discovery to Optimisation at Scale) while inspiring creativity and innovation across the wider business.

As an active collaborator as well as leader, we expect someone who is comfortable working in a delivery team model while supporting innovative and sustainable solutions. As a leader and facilitator you’ll be working with cross functional teams that include an unusually diverse set of skill sets; from design and technology to medical, commercial, ops and regulatory/legal.

You’ll be working in what is rightly the most highly regulated environment, with responsibility for products that can be genuinely life changing. This is not a limitation and the right candidate will see (as we do) the opportunity instead to work at high fidelity and deliver high quality experiences that really make a difference in the world.

A successful Product Design Director at Numan will:

  • Set the vision for and build the capabilities for Product Design at Numan - across all facets of Product Design; Visual/UI, UX, Research

  • Hire and develop a highly talented team of product designers and researchers that consistently delivers on projects and is well-balanced across a range of design skill sets.

  • Build a team culture where designers grow in their careers and feel a strong sense of inclusion and engagement with the wider numan business and its goals.

  • Lead the craft execution of the design team, helping them review their decisions and ensuring Design craft excellence and execution that fits our requirements for accessibility, usability and regulation, not just commercial performance.

  • Create innovative design and discovery frameworks that help numan deploy our strategy with agility and dynamism - helping the company to form concepts and validate/iterate them quickly, but with a sound logic that means we invest in the right ideas at the right level.

  • Use (and develop processes to repeatedly surface) insight to work with PMs to shape the product roadmap, both short term and long-term

    • Successfully develop methodologies that deliver informative qualitative insights that put the customers at the heart of our design and product decisions at all times.

    • Work with the analytics teams to ensure qualitative insight and measurements informs the team and their design decisions.

  • Be able to apply design logic and create processes that ensure Product Design excellence at all parts of the Product Design Lifecycle from Discovery to Optimistion at scale.

About you:

  • High empathy and collaborative individual with an entrepreneurial, can-do approach

  • 6+ years product design leadership experience

  • Evidenced experience across all facets of Product Design; Research, UX, Visual/UI and of Conversion mechanics

  • An excellent visual and verbal storyteller, with the proven ability to deliver insights about people and behavior in a way that generates empathy and engagement from the wider cross functional team, building commitment for ideas that prioritise user needs.

  • Practical experience with design thinking and lean development

  • Experience in Agile/Scrum environments - able to organise and facilitate key Agile ceremonies (we’re not slaves to Agile but want someone who brings an established toolkit)

  • Equal enthusiasm for strategic plans and translating them into tactical daily execution

  • Strong analytical skills, ability to interpret data and trends, diagnose problems, and recommend action plans to resolve issues

  • Experience in working across the explore-exploit spectrum - both optimising current growth while strategically exploring new innovations and offerings.

  • Comfortable using both quantitative and qualitative data to inform design decisions

Behaviours and Values:

  • Mission led - with a passion and deep subject matter interest in health and wellbeing being critical

  • Highly empathetic and collaborative - you’ll be bringing together and driving contribution from wide set of stakeholders

  • Low ego - the best leaders impulse momentum when they need to but spend most of their time enabling teams to do their best work by providing context, direction and removing roadblocks.

  • Ownership - we win and lose together, but this role requires candidates who are comfortable taking ownership and high levels of responsibility. We reward that with a highly autonomous way of working that empowers you and your teams.

  • Health technology background

  • Experience working in regulated industries

  • Involvement in strategic Business leadership

  • Experience in a fast growth startup environment
